The Resort Today
Monarch Ski Resort in Colorado is a hidden gem that offers a truly authentic skiing experience. As a well-traveled skier, I’ve explored many mountains, but Monarch stands out for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse terrain. Covering 800 acres of skiable terrain, Monarch boasts an impressive variety of runs for all levels.
One of my personal favorites is Gunner’s Ridge, a challenging black diamond that offers thrilling drops and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The resort's natural snow, without the need for snowmaking, ensures that the powder here is as fresh and light as it gets.
Monarch’s commitment to preserving its family-friendly vibe is evident in its well-groomed beginner and intermediate runs, which are perfect for those new to the slopes or looking for a more relaxed experience. What’s even better is that Monarch remains one of the few privately owned ski resorts in the country, maintaining a down-to-earth charm that’s often lost at larger, corporate-owned resorts.
Looking ahead, Monarch has exciting plans to expand its terrain, with future developments aimed at adding more lift-served backcountry skiing, making it even more appealing to advanced skiers.
When it comes to unwinding after a day on the slopes, the Pioneer Lodge is a favorite spot of mine. With its rustic ambiance and cozy fireplace, it’s the perfect place to relax, refuel, and share stories of the day’s adventures.
Monarch Ski Resort may not be the biggest mountain in Colorado, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable. For those seeking a true Colorado skiing experience, Monarch offers an unbeatable combination of great terrain, friendly atmosphere, and natural beauty.
The future of Monarch
Monarch Mountain has some exciting long-term plans that will elevate the experience for all skiers, especially those with a taste for backcountry adventure. One of the most thrilling aspects of their future development is the expansion of terrain specifically designed for backcountry enthusiasts.
Currently, backcountry skiers at Monarch access the untouched powder by hiking or skinning, which, while rewarding, can be a challenge. The resort's plans include adding lift-served terrain that will change the game. This means backcountry skiers will soon have easier access to pristine, deep powder without the lengthy ascents. It’s all about bringing the wild, off-piste experience within reach, while still offering that true backcountry thrill.
The timeline for these expansions is set over the next few years, with Monarch taking a careful, sustainable approach to ensure the mountain’s natural beauty and character remain intact. They’re committed to thoughtful growth that complements the existing terrain and enhances the skier experience.
As these plans unfold, skiers can look forward to more diverse terrain, easier access to high-quality powder, and a backcountry experience that merges the thrill of untouched runs with the convenience of lift service. This expansion will undoubtedly appeal to advanced skiers looking to push their limits in a safe, controlled environment.
Monarch’s upcoming developments promise to solidify its place as a top destination for backcountry skiers, offering a unique blend of adventure and accessibility. Despite these changes, Monarch remains dedicated to preserving the charm and authenticity that have made it a beloved mountain for years. The future looks bright, and there’s plenty to look forward to at Monarch Mountain.
Tickets and pricing
Monarch Mountain stands out for its affordability, offering some of the best value in Colorado skiing. A day ticket here runs around $109, which is a steal compared to the larger resorts nearby, where prices often exceed $150. If you’re planning on spending a lot of time on the slopes, the season pass is an even better deal at about $629. Seniors get an especially sweet deal, with day tickets priced at $89 and season passes at $529. When you consider the quality of the terrain and the welcoming vibe, Monarch’s pricing is hard to beat.
Where I stayed for the ski trip
During my trip to Monarch Mountain, I stayed just 10 minutes down the road at TATA River Cabins, in the Arkansas Cabin right on the water. The cabin was warm, cozy, and the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes. Waking up to the sound of the river and the peaceful surroundings made it an ideal retreat.
One of the biggest perks of staying at TATA River Cabins was the convenience. Being closer to the mountain allowed me to skip a lot of the traffic coming from Salida, which meant I could get an early start and catch the best snow in the morning. There's nothing quite like carving fresh tracks on a powder day, and the extra time on the mountain made all the difference. If you're looking to maximize your ski time and enjoy a cozy, riverside stay, TATA River Cabins is a fantastic choice.
