Mountain biking in Salida

The Monarch Crest Trail is truly spectacular with unmatched views and lots of decent!

The Riding

I recently stumbled upon Salida, Colorado, and let me tell you—this little mountain town is an absolute gem for mountain bikers! I’d heard about Salida’s bike scene before, but riding here was next level. Who knew you could rip some of the best singletrack in the country while surrounded by jaw-dropping mountain views?

The vibe on the trails was just as cool as the riding itself. You’ll find people of all ages and abilities, from seasoned bikers bombing downhill to beginners getting comfortable on flowy singletrack. The mountain biking community is super friendly, and the laid-back atmosphere makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Whether you’re ripping down a steep descent or just taking in the scenery on a cross-country trail, the energy is electric. The fact that this little town has some of the best mountain biking in the Rockies is mind-blowing!

The history of the trails

What started as a network of old mining roads and backcountry trails has transformed into a mountain biking paradise, thanks to local trail builders and volunteers. The Arkansas Hills and Methodist Mountain trail systems, along with the famous Monarch Crest Trail, now make Salida a destination for riders from all over the country. The trails are not just well-maintained, but they also offer a perfect blend of challenging technical sections, smooth flow, and epic views.

Getting the gear

I swung by SubCulture Cyclery on F Street and picked up a killer full-suspension mountain bike for $65 - $100 a day. They even set me up with a helmet and knee pads because, trust me, some of the descents can get gnarly. Another great option is Absolute Bikes on Sackett Avenue, where you can rent a bike for a similar price and grab any extra gear like hydration packs or gloves. Both shops are close to the main trailheads, so it’s super easy to gear up and hit the trails. The staff at both spots were super knowledgeable and gave me some great tips on the best trails to ride based on my skill level.

Where I stayed after the ride

After a full day of biking, I was ready to kick back and soak in the mountain vibes. That’s when I found Tata River Cabins, and specifically, Cabin Eight—the Monarch Mountian Cabin. It’s only a 15-minute drive from the main trailheads, which is perfect because, let’s be honest, after shredding all day, you want to relax.

This cabin is a dream come true for anyone looking to unwind after a day of adventure. It sits right on the banks of the Arkansas River, so you can fall asleep to the sound of rushing water. The western-themed decor gives it a cozy, rustic feel, and it has two full-size beds with a half-wall for privacy, a bathroom, kitchen, and a super comfy seating area. But the real star of the show? The wraparound porch. After a long ride, I just sat out there, sipping a cold drink, watching the river, and soaking up the peacefulness. No TV, no distractions—just me, nature, and the sounds of Colorado.

Tata River Cabins is perfect for anyone wanting to unplug and experience the real outdoors. They’ve got bocce ball, horseshoes, and a pond to explore, and you’re minutes away from hiking, fishing, and—of course—more mountain biking. Oh, and did I mention it’s pet-friendly? You can bring your dog along for the adventure! Cabin Number Seven has everything you need for an epic getaway. It’s like having your own little slice of Colorado heaven, just a stone’s throw from Salida’s epic trails.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in the mountains with some serious biking thrills, Salida and Tata River Cabins should be at the top of your list. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
